May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention month and a time to not only educate youth about ways to prevent pregnancy, but to also celebrate accomplishments that have already been made in reducing teen pregnancy in the United States. A National Center for HealthStatistics report found that between 1990 and 2008, teen pregnancy rates in the United States fell 40 percent to the lowest levels ever recorded (from 116.8 to 69.8 per 1,000). However, rates remained higher for African-American (121.6) and Latino teens (111.5) than for their white peers (44.8), and each year, almost 750,000 American teens become pregnant.
