U.S. Panel Changes Stance, Says All Adults Should Get Tested for HIV:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued a new recommendation statement on Monday regarding adults and HIV testing. The statement, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, asserted that all adults between the ages of 15 and 65 should be tested for HIV, regardless of whether or not they are considered high risk.

“May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention month and a time to not only educate youth about ways to prevent pregnancy, but to also celebrate accomplishments that have already been made in reducing teen pregnancy in the United States. A National Center for HealthStatistics report found that between 1990 and 2008, teen pregnancy rates in the United States fell 40 percent to the lowest levels ever recorded (from 116.8 to 69.8 per 1,000). However, rates remained higher for African-American (121.6) and Latino teens (111.5) than for their white peers (44.8), and each year, almost 750,000 American teens become pregnant.

April is National Minority Health Month !

This is a time to raise awareness about the state of minority health in this country.

Asians, Latinos, Native Americans, and African American populations are among minority populations which suffer disproportionately more than their white counterparts. Health disparities among these populations continue despite the steady improvements in health care access and services in the United States

According to the U.S. Office of Minority Health, in 2009, the death rate for African Americans was higher than whites for heart disease, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Also the tuberculosis rate in 2010 was 8 times higher for Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders, with a case rate of 16.6 (cases per 100,000), as compared to 2.0 for the white population. These are only some of the statistics of disparities that have plagued ethnically diverse populations and their communities.

In order to reduce and hopefully eliminate these health disparities, YOU must take action. It is important to promote and introduce preventative efforts, and right now is the time to do it. This month we encourage you to act in your community and organize. Health equity is very important and can be achieved one act at a time. As a leader in your community you can take an opportunity to embark on action during this important month. We suggest that you take action via social media, as it has become a great and powerful tool! Post on Facebook, Tumblr, tweet some facts, pin an infographic! Remember to use the hashtag #ActNow. Then head over to the Office of Minority Health for additional information!
